Saalach Valley High Trail

To begin this tour, you will warm up with an easy valley hike along the banks of the Leoganger Ache to the foot of the imposing Leoganger Steinberge. From Leogang you will head out via the Schwarzleo Valley and the Spielbergtörl to Hinterglemm.

The trail to Saalbach will lead you across the Grasberge mountains, through the variety-packed mountain landscapes of the Limestone Alps, with your reward being those great summiting experiences and glorious views.

The fourth daily stage takes you along the Saalachtal High Trail, through Alpine meadows covered in colourful flowers, to Viehhofen and to conclude this week of hiking, you will be able to enjoy the romantic Rhododendron Path close to Viehhofen and an exhilarating ride down the Alpine Slide on the Biberg back to the valley and to Saalfelden.

Getting here

We can arrange airport transfers from Salzburg or Innsbruck

  • Day 1 - Saalfelden - Leogang

There are two options to choose from today which both cover the distance from Saalfelden to Leogang.

The first option is a 16km hike taking approximately 6 hours.

This hike will take you through the Dorfheim Valley to Lenzing, Wieserberg, Bernerwinkel, Mitterbrand, Sinningerberg, Ullach, Priesteregg and on to Leogang itself.

The second option is a 19km hike taking approximately 8 hours.

  • Day 2 - Leogand - Saalbach Hinterglemm

Again today you have two hiking options to choose from.  There is a shorter 12km hike taking approximately 6 hours or a more challenging 17km hike taking approximately 8 hours.

Saalbach Hinterglemm offers more than 400km of hiking trails during the Summer months.  It is here that sporty hikers are rewarded with impressive summits during their demanding day excursions.  Pleasure hikers choose to get up the mountain with the mountain railways in order to explore the Salzburg mountain world in a comfortable and effortless way.

  • Day 3 - Saalbach Hinterglemm

Today you can choose from an 18km round trip hike or a 12km hike.

The objective of today's hiking is to reach the Schattberg Mountain which has three peaks.  The goal is to reach the West Schattberg at 2096m and the East Schattberg at 2018m.

The West and East Schattberg are accessible on ski lifts from Hinterglemm and Saalbach that form part of the Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang ski region. Before the Schattberg express cableway was erected in 2003, the Schattberg Cable Car (Schattbergbahn), built in 1960, ran from Saalbach to the summit. This cable car was, after its upgrade in 1973, the largest of its type in Austria, capable of transporting 100 people per cabin, and having the strongest standing cable (63 mm) in the world.

Around the mountain are several alm huts. The area is accessible on numerous hiking trails.

  • Day 4 - Saalbach - Stiegernigg

Today's walking time is approximately 6.5 hours and a 16km hike from Saalbach to Stiegernigg.

  • Day 5 - Stiegernigg - Saalfelden

On the last day of your hiking tour you will make the 16km hike back to Saalfelden where you will have the opportunity to enjoy the 400 metre long summer toboggan run directly at the mountain station of the Asitz cable car.

From 1800 metres up you will streak through the Pinzgau mountains with magnificent views of the Steineres Meer from Saalfelden and the Leogang Steinberge Mountains.  After the ride, the ski lift brings all the sledders back to the start!  An adventure not to be missed at the end of your week.
