Skiing in Schladming

The Schladming region ranks as one of the most popular skiing areas in Austria in the winter. It is part of the Ski Amade which offers one of the largest selections of slopes and lifts in all of Austria on a single pass. The Ski Amade encompasses 5 ski regions with 860km of slopes. The Schladming-Dachstein ski region has 123km of slopes and 46 lifts including the world famous Planai stadium - the only Alpine venue with a Worldcup downhill that finishes in the centre of the town. The Schladming ski area comprises four mountains which are well linked - the Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm. There are a number of good long runs such as the Hochwurzen valley run (7.7km), the Hauser Kaibling FIS hill, Galsterbergalm valley run and Riesneralm Forest run (each 7km long) as well as the Reiteralm Valley run (6km). If you still want to ski after your day on the slopes there is nightskiing available at Hochwurzen and Galsterberg or if you fancy a different experience there are some good sledging routes. The Dachstein glacier has the sky walk and the Ice Palace and the resort has many great restaurants where you can check out the Styrian traditional dishes and hospitality.

What We Like

The glacier at Dachstein means there is guaranteed snow although Schladming also has a good snow record.

The 4 mountain area of Schladming (Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm) are well linked.

What we would change

More ski in/ski out hotels would be good, but the ski buses are good and some of the hotels are still close to the slopes and lifts.

Not much else to change as it's good skiing in a lovely resort with a reasonable transfer time.

Top 5 things to do

  1. Visit the Dachstein glacier with its' ice caves and 100m long suspension bridge
  2. Go night skiing
  3. Ski down the world famous Planai slope
  4. Try the 2.5km long zipline on the Stoderzinken
  5. Check out your ski days statistics with a print out - just insert your liftpass into one of the machines down in town and it will tell you about your day.

Flying to Salzburg is easiest and closest but Linz, Graz and Munich are all possible as well.
