8 Day Croatian Rivers and Mountains Tour

This tour is all about the rivers and mountains and it will be an unforgettable experience.  Included in the program are water activities as well as hiking, but is suitable for all ages.  The waters that you will be sea kayaking in are friendly and warm and not especially physically demanding.

You will be based in the Novigrad Bay area which is surrounded by national parks and nature reserves.  The Kornati Islands, Krka River, Paklenica Canyon and Velebit Moutain are just some of them.  Not a typical tourist hotel resort, the town of Novigrad is stretched along the coastline and is perfect for guests who want to get away from the big summer crowds and yet be in a friendly village atmosphere.

  • Day 1 - Arrival to destination – Novigrad village

Your trip begins today in Novigrad a small, yet lively, colourful coastal town which can be explored best on foot.

The hotel is well located for exploring and enjoying the magnificent view of the bay and mountain peaks of the Nature Park Velebit.

After settling into your accommodation, there is a get-together dinner and presentation of the program.

    • Dinner is included
    • Accommodation at the Aparthotel Castum Novum

  • Day 2 - Sea kayaking under Maslenica Bridge

Your first full day is all about exploring the hidden places of Novigrad Bay in your sea kayak.

After sea kayaking instructions on the beach just in front of your hotel you will head out towards Maslenica Bridge.  It was built over Novska idrilo – the narrow channel which connects the Velebit channel and Novigrad Sea. The total length of the bridge is 300m.

Lunch will be enjoyed at a beautiful little beach.

    • Breakfast and dinner is included
    • Sea kayaking 4 hours moderate
    • Accommodation at the Aparthotel Castum Novum

  • Day 3 - Hiking day in the National Park Paklenica

Your small expedition this morning will lead you into the Paklenica National Park, the most famous hiking and rock climbing national park in Croatia.  It covers the area of torrent flows of both the Velika and Mala Paklenica Rivers and their distinctive canyons carved vertically into the south slopes of the Velebit mountain range.

Hiking is the only way to really get to know Paklenica.  The people here were predominantly nomad stock herders and you will see a lot of mountain shepherd residences along with ruins of numerous sacred buildings including churches, chapels, altars and holy hills.  A reflection of times gone by.

    • Breakfast and lunch included
    • Hiking 4-6 hours, moderate

  • Day 4 - Kayaking Zrmanja River – magnificent wild-west-like canyon

Today we head out for canoeing down the magnificent wild-west like canyon of the Zrmanja and Krupa Rivers.

After a short introduction to paddling you will push off for an afternoon of refreshing fun on the clear, warm and emerald waters of these Croatian rivers, considered two of the most beautiful in Europe.

Your water craft may be a raft, canoe or sit-on-top kayak - depending on the river conditions.

You will get to enjoy waterfalls, easy rapids, hidden swimming pools, steep sided canyons and very likely no one else on the river but your group.

The evening will be spent in the peaceful Novigrad whilst enjoying a traditional supper.

    • Breakfast and dinner is included
    • Kayaking or rafting 3-4 hours

  • Day 5 - Optional trip day

Today you have the chance to be as active or as relaxed as you like!

You can either relax by the river, swim, play beach volleyball or even take another optional bike tour on your own.

Alternatively, there are several organised and guided hiking tours or the chance to do some canyoning, climbing, sightseeing or beach trips.

Please note that the optional trip will incur an additional charge of approx 50€ per head, payable on site, and is dependent on suitable weather conditions. The price is based on a minimum of 4 participants.

    • Breakfast and lunch included

  • Day 6 - Trekking Krupa River and sightseeing Zadar town

You will start your day with a van drive to a little village called Golubici where you will visit a local sheep and goat farm.  After tasting the local cheese and drinks you will take a short walk down the hill to Kudin and the Bridge of Kuda which was built at the turn of the 19th to 19th century.

Legend says that a young guy called Kuda wanted to be closer to his loved one at the other bank of the river. So he built the bridge from 12 arches out of travertine blocks and just as many pillars.  The last two arches are now damaged but Kudin Bridge still stands despite time and the high waters in the winter.

After the hike, you will stop and visit the Orthodox monastery on the Krupa River bank.

You will finish your fabulous day by continuing your journey to Zadar.  This beautiful old town on the Adriatic coast is well worth seeing and experiencing.

    • Breakfast included
    • Hiking 3 - 4 hours, moderate

  • Day 7 - Sea kayaking expedition into Zrmanja River canyon

Your trip today is to the Zrmanja River canyon.  The water here is brackish - a mix of fresh and salt water - which is the reason for all of the abundant life under the surface.

The eel which dwells here is a favourite local gourmet specialty, but we are more likely to spot turtles, fish and birds along the way. After kayaking upstream on calm waters you will be able to enjoy swimming and jumping off cliffs before making an optional lunch break.

There is a farewell dinner in the evening on the terrace of the hotel.

    • Breakfast and dinner included
    • Kayaking 4-6 hours, moderate
